One of Dr. Shami's interests is repair of neural tube defects before birth. This potentially devastating defect develops early in pregnancy, and the risk may be decreased with folic acid supplementation taken before conception. In the past the standard approach was to repair the defect after birth; however, repair prior to birth results in better neurologic outcomes. When the surgery is performed during pregnancy by an open procedure through the uterus, a cesarean section is required for delivery. With newer technology some centers are now performing the repair fetoscopically. Scopes are placed in the uterus through small ports. Without the large incision in the uterus, the mother has the possibility of a vaginal delivery. |
In addition to describing the procedures on the forefront for fetal abnormalities, Dr. Shami will present and teach the advances in the management of high risk pregnancies, critical care obstetrics, and medical ethics. |
Three years ago Dr. Shami first expressed a desire to teach and train the Bhutanese physicians, and to this day he remains interested and committed to helping the people of Bhutan. |
In June 2022, Dr. Shamshirsaz relocated to Boston, Massachusetts where he is now the Director of Maternal Fetal Medicine at Boston Children's Hospital and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Harvard Medical School. |
